As reported by the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles in their article “Penalties for alcohol or drug-related violations,” driving while impaired by any substances is a very serious offense and can carry serious penalties.

“Driving while intoxicated is a crime. Your judgment, coordination and ability to drive a vehicle change when you consume any amount of alcohol,” the New York State Department of Motor Vehicles said.
